Comparing Elisabeth's costumes in the Vienna productions of Elisabeth das musical (Act 1)
And I'm back once again to perhaps prove a point, but mainly to pour out some of the frustration. In this post, I'll be comparing the costumes chronologically worn by Elisabeth in the Vienna productions of Elisabeth: the original/1st revival (designed by Reinhard Heinrich; lower refered to as the Heinrich version) and the 2nd revival/Schönbrunn concert (designed by Yan Tax; lower refered to as the Tax version). The Yan Tax design was first used in the 2001 Essen production, but was later carried over into the 2nd revival Vienna production in 2012 and VBW kept on using it since.
I tried to mainly find higher quality photos of all these costumes, but sometimes, I had no luck in doing that. So, at times, I will use a screenshot because nothing else was available. I mainly tried to look for pictures of the 1st revival (circa 2003-2005) and 2nd revival (circa 2012 - 2013), but I will sometimes use pictures from the original production (1992-1996).
Disclaimer: the contents below are my subjective opinion as a student of set and costume design and I will be mainly looking at what the costume tells me within the context and the construction. If you prefer costumes I don't, your opinion is totaly valid and you're welcome to discuss why you think otherwise in reblogs and comments below. :) After each section, I'll try to sum up which of the costumes I liked better and why.
Little Sisi:
Heinrich version: light blue and white trachten/dirndl with a lace apron, hair bow and ribbon choker. Not only fitting her origin as a Bavarian princess, but also sweet with the pastel colors and the accordingly fluffy, but light construction. The costume is girly, but not hindering when is comes to Sisi climbing trees and other physical activities she mentions she likes.
Tax version: short green/brown/orange plaid print dress. Now, this is a historically plausible costume, but do I like it? Absolutely not. The colors and print are ugly and don't fit Sisi's character in the slightest. And with the way the costume has multiple ruffles and pleats, it just makes it too busy to look at. And the skirt is too fluffy for this point in the show. (And they did Abla absolutely dirty with the wig they gave her in 2022 Schönbrunn)
Which is better? Heinrich version all the way. It's sweet and girly, but not too much and I love that it's a trachten/dirndl. The Tax version is just too busy with the plaid and I don't like the colors.
Bad Ischl:
Heinrich version: Dark blue short-sleeved bodice and skirt, matching hair bow and velvet ribbon long choker and bracelets. This costume is directly inspired by what Elisabeth could have worn during this first meeting in Ischl (when she met Franz, she and all her family were in dark mourning dresses, since they didn't have time to change and unlike Helene, who looked washed out in her dark dress, the dark dress really suited Elisabeth). Another little interesting historical detail I noticed here is the choker, which looks like a ribbon choker Elisabeth was mostly depicted wearing during her engagement to Franz. So, awesome that they kept in these little historical details.
Tax version: Long-sleeved bodice and skirt. Now, I've seen this dress in a ton of different fabrics (white with a broad floral trim on the skirt, blue plaid) but I think the most common variant of this costume is this beige one with the orange-red and green pattern. Now, once again, this is a historically more plausible costume, since the meeting took place during the day and so it would be proper for Elisabeth to be covered up, but it doesn't take into account any of the historical happenings. Which just seems to me like the designer didn't do any background research into Elisabeth specifically. And if we're going on pure aesthetic level alone, this dress is so plain and boring.
Which is better? Once again, Heinrich won this. No question needed. And while we're at it, the colorplay the dark dress on Elisabeth offers in Nichts ist schwer is much better that the light dress (We're about to get into lighting here, because that is also important to consider). With the reddish and blue lights for this scene, the dark dress stands out against that very red Habsburg eagle, but the light dress gets a red/pink wash from the lights, which makes Elisabeth almost visually disappear in that scene (see image below). The entire colorplay in the Tax version is simply off for this scene (because the thing that most stands out to me isn't Elisabeth, it's Franz's VERY green knitted socks).
Wedding dress:
Heinrich version: white satin bodice and skirt with silvery translucent overlay, ruffled bertha collar with beaded fringe and puffed translucent sleeves. The amount of soft texture this dress has under the stage lights is so amazing and I really like the choice of sleeve here, since it does remind me of the puffed sleeves she had on her trachten, but this is like a more grown up version. And since the sleeves are translucent and long, it gives Elisabeth the appearance of not fitting in with the court ladies, who all have short sleeves in opaque fabrics . The silvery contrasts look great and the way that white fringe looks like the fringe on Tod's jacket from the Prolog (thus connecting them visually) is *chef's kiss*.
Tax version: white satin button-up bodice with pagoda sleeves and skirt with striped accents. This dress is giving me a whole lot of nothing. Like, there isn't anything eyecatching here. And it makes Elisabeth look kinda dowdy with how covered up she is. And, if they were going for more "historical accuracy", why then put her in a dress that could be classified as daywear (with the long sleeves and the very prominent buttons in the front) if all of the wedding should be taking place in the evening?
Which is better? Heinrich version. The Tax version is too flat and plain for me. If the Heinrich design is proving anything so far, it's that historical accuracy can easily be beaten out with good and purposeful artistic design.
Nightgown:
Heinrich version: structured white nightgown with a slightly raised waistline, broad lace straps and lace trim. Once again, I love the structure the fabric has, it looks soft and romantic under the stage lights. The straps are so characteristic and they make her arms completely bare, thus making her appear vulnerable when facing Sophie and the ladies in waiting.
Tax version: white satin empire waist nightgown with short puffed sleeves. They literally couldn't have picked a thinner and cheaper looking satin for this costume? It literally looks so flimsy, especially since this costume has no texture and no decoration going on. I think the very high empire waistline is also a rather off choice, since it would be very out of fashion during the 1850s and it is a waist placement that often looks awkward on a lot of people. And there are the sleeves. They are very awkwardly short. Especially on the concert costumes, the sleeves literally look like they have 2 cm of an inseam at best.
Which is better? I think this is no surprise, but Heinrich once again gets it.
Stationen eine Ehe:
Heinrich version: White robe with ruffled lace trimmings, long bell-shaped sleeves and a broad light blue sash at the waist. I always love when I see a good nightrobe on stage and this is no exception. The material is delicate and translucent enough to keep Elisabeth looking very vulnerable in this scene, even though she's covered up. And the amount and placement of ruffling is just right. What I also find very interesting is that sash, because that color is so eyecatching (reminds me of a robin's egg) and it really gives the robe a distinct look.
Tax version: Reddish-pink duochrome satin bodice with fake buttons and pagoda sleeves w/ white puffed undersleeves and a matching skirt worn over a circular hoopskirt. Once again, more historically plausable, but it doesn't offer me anything as a costume. By making Elisabeth's silhouette here the same as Sophie and the ladies in waiting and by not giving the fabric any sort of softening embellishments, it removes this vulnerability she should have here. And I don't get why they went for this weird pink shade, because it makes no storytelling sense. And while we're at it, why did they choose to put her in this braided wig here? In real life portraiture, we don't get Elisabeth depicted with her hair in these braided updos up until the mid 1860s. The Heinrich version cleverly went around this by keeping Elisabeth with long loose curls through Act 1 to emphasize her girlishness and naivity, so when we see her with her hair braided up in the portrait reveal, it's this clear visual breaking point for her, showing us how she matured. But in the Tax version, it's a mess when it comes to wigs.
Which is better? Once again, Heinrich takes the cake. I feel like I might be biased, but I just can't find any rhyme and reason in the Tax costumes so far.
Schatten Hungarian dress:
Heinrich version: black and dark blue striped satin bodice with a fake stomacher and puffed sleeves and skirt with a black lace apron. For how little time this costume gets on stage, it is so crucial in this design, since it is both a visual paralel with Elisabeth's Hungarian coronation gown (but here, the silhouette is less mature and it's like a dark version of that dress), but also, this dress is paralelled again in the Mayerling dresses, since Shatten in Act 1 and Mayerling are paralel scenes, where Death takes away one of Elisabeth's children because of her unadvised decisions.
Tax version: same dress as in Stationen eine Ehe, but over it is worn a red velvet atilla with gold cording and brown fur trim and a matching red velvet hat. The atilla looks decently made and the cording does seem ok. This is a much technically easier way how to do this quick costume change, but it's ok. What I don't like here is the hat. It simply looks awkward witch the placement of where it's sitting and that cord in the front doesn't make it better. And once again, I am missing the paralels!
Which is better? I will probably sound like I'm repeating myself, but Heinrich version wins again. You can never beat good paralels and visual connections in costume design.
Elisabeth, mach auf mein Engel:
Heinrich version: Same robe as during Stationen eine Ehe (but this time with a better picture). Still love it here, because this is still supposed to be a vulnerable moment (especially when Death comes in at the end). So by keeping her in this nightgown, which she previously wore at a vulnerable moment, we have an immediate connection of how she feels.
Tax version: White chiffon robe with elbow length sleeves w/ lace engageants and with a train trimmed with lace ruffles, worn over a long pale pink/peach/orange?? satin slip. And we have a dreaded return of that flimsy satin! The nightgown for the most part looks ok, but another of this production's big issues comes in here and that is a gaping issue on front closing overcostumes. (If you read my 2022 Schönbrunn roast, you might remember how I complained about the massive amount of gaping in the front Der Tod's doctor disguise had). Here, the gaping could have easily been fixed with an added ruffle along the seam.
Which is better? Heinrich once again.
Star dress:
Heinrich version: Cream bodice with gathered tulle overlay, bertha collar trimmed with pearls and 3 tiered tulle ruffle sleeves, matching skirt with draped tulle overlay, tulle sash and pearl necklace. I love how this dress isn't an outright copy of the Winterhalter portrait, but keeps the soft, etherial and dreamy vibe the dress has. This dress looks light as a feather and even if it doesn't outright have stars, it has a light shimmer in the tulle.
Tax version: Cream bodice decorated with tulle overlay w/ gold embroidered stars, with pleated bertha collar, single tier tulle ruffle sleeves, matching skirt, matching star embroidered shawl, white satin gloves and star necklace. I love how this costume looks exactly like the portrait! The design is great, but sometimes, there have been some hiccups with the execution, specifically with balancing the volume of the sleeve in relation to the skirt. The costume below is one of the better ones, but often, the sleeves end up being too big and the skirt too narrow, throwing the proportion off. And sometimes, the costume can end up looking too stiff.
Which is better? Depending on the version. For me, this will be a tie. The better versions of the Tax design are equally as good as the Heinrich versions. However, if I were to take into account some of the stiffer versions of the Tax design, Heinrich would take the win again.

The true logic behind the "kitschification" of Elisabeth Schönbrunn
After hanging out in Vienna for a few days, I feel like a lot of Elisabeth Schönbrunn makes sense to me in a way it didnt before. But this is not a compliment... XD
To put it simply, it feels like a catered tourism ad. Like, think about it. There was already so much kitsch potential in the original Elisabeth (actors playing widely mythologised iconic characters in period-accurate costumes straight from the portraits and postcards), and the most cynical critics kinda dismissed it as a tourist trap from the start. But Schönbrunn puts in so much additional touristy kitschiness... Let me make a quick list.
1. The concert experience as a whole
It's a massive outdoor concert in peak holiday/summer season, in the iconic Schönbrunn environment. With the astronomical ticket prices (and the intentionally massive number of seats), I feel like it's intentionally made into a "luxury experience". The target audience is not really musical fans: the target audience is Elisabeth (historical figure) fans, royalists & Habsburg history enthusiasts, tourists in Vienna and people who don't usually go for that sort od thing but want to be immersed in history in the real historical location, with famous actors, famous costumes and catchy music. Idk, I think this became apparent to me when I encountered somewhat pushy concert ticket merchants at the entrances to the Hofburg and Schönbrunn, with little details given about what exactly would be performer at the concert. It was very generic. And with Elisabeth Schönbrunn too, you aren't really paying for the content of the experience or to see the art - you're paying for the experience itself. Of course, there are tons of advance bookings made for the Schönbrunn concert (in fact I doubt you can get tickets the day of, given the very short runs), so perhaps this theory doesn't entirely hold up, but still.
2. The postcard projections
The Schönbrunn stage is surrounded by two big screens with images projected onto them for the audience to see. In addition to providing closeups for the people sitting too far away to see much otherwise, they show real historical pictures (maps, photographs) during transitions between songs. Now, VBW tends to like projections in their other musical productions too lol, but while wandering in Vienna I realised that many of the images projected at Schönbrunn are sold as postcards - at the Schönbrunn souvenir shop. This could be chalked up to intentional irony (like during Kitsch and Neues Sortiment, obviously it's an extension of Lucheni's whole thing), but sometimes it does seem to happen genuinely (like during Die Ersten Vier Jahre iirc).
3. The carriage
When I went to the Hofburg and saw the horse carriages leaving from the front with tourists aboard (120 euros per ride), I had a moment of recognition. It was exactly like when FJ and Sisi rode in at the beginning of the second act of Schönbrunn. This is what first got me thinking about Schönbrunn being a giant tourist ad for the "Habsburg Vienna experience" XD Now, idk if I'm being a conspiracy theorist by saying it's an intentional ad, but it does seem a bit suspicious on that front... I should check if the carriage operating company sponsored them.
4. Tod
Schönbrunn Tod is so... generic? The white leather makes him seem almost invisible, in a way. The black leather from 2012 at least had an edge to it, casting a contrast between him and the historically dressed characters. But the white leather (like Tod himself) is just there, kinda blandly. I feel like it's intentional too. If Tod had more flair (like he had, in some way, in every Viennese production up until this point), it would perhaps feel inappropriate to the target audience of Habsburg enjoyers and casual tourists. So he's not queer, not very supernatural, not odd in appearance or demeanor, not even dressed in a particularly eyecatching way. I think it's because the show relies more on the appeal of the Habsburg costume replicas and familiar historical figures than the actual subversive writing gimmick that Michael Kunze created as he created Der Tod - because some people inevitably wouldn't Get It if Tod was less bland. They can't write Tod out for obvious reasons, but they can make him as palatable as possible to a wide, general audience. This is the true reason they got rid of the Mayerling kiss - I'm not sure Tod's role is very clear in the Schönbrunn staging at all, so some people in the audience wouldn't be able to appreciate his monstrous, all-consuming, equal-opportunity nature (which is at its most visible in the Mayerling kiss. It's the first and only time we see Tod take someone's life so violently, completely and explicitly. Lol my Mayerling kiss enjoyment is showing.)
So yeah. This might read a bit like a conspiracy theory but to me, it all makes sense now. I get where the choices come from a bit better, but I will never ever accept them. The VBW might want to rake in easy money with the mangled kitschified skeleton of this show, and it probably helps finance their other musical productions quite a bit, but still... I wish they would bring back the horrors... 💔

As the situation in Gaza continued to deteriorate amid Israel’s ongoing attacks on civilians, residents of the enclave are still facing extreme shortages of basic necessities due to the Israeli ongoing blockade. Although the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza is open 24/7, Israeli procedures hamper the entrance of lifesaving humanitarian aid. Egypt’s President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has accused Israel of delaying aid deliveries into Gaza as a pressure tactic. “This is a form of pressure on the Gaza Strip and its people over the conflict and the release of hostages. They are using this as a pressure tool on the people of the Strip,” Sisi said, as cited by Reuters. Meanwhile, at the Israel-controlled Karem Abu Salem (Kerem Shalom) between Gaza and Israel, Israeli protests, including family members of captives in Gaza, gathered on Wednesday to prevent aid trucks from entering Gaza.
The protestors, who are part of a group known as Order Nine Movement, are calling for an end to all aid from entering Gaza, including medical supplies, until all Israeli captives are released, reported Al Jazeera. Over the last two weeks, only 80 trucks a day have been allowed to enter the Gaza Strip due to Israel’s lengthy process of clearance and security checks, Al Jazeera added.
UN agencies and humanitarian organizations working on the ground say that the aid that gets through is “a drop in the ocean” of what is needed amid the unfolding crisis in Gaza, which is said to be on the brink of famine. For context, before October 7, about 500 delivery trucks would enter Gaza every day.
Mads Gilbert, a Norwegian physician and humanitarian activist, told Al Jazeera that Israel is weaponizing aid restrictions against Gaza. “It is a deliberate governmental plan to eradicate the people of Gaza — through disease, through bombing and through non-availability of medical supplies and medical services, and famine and the lack of water,” Gilbert said. “This is one of the most gruesome, concerted attacks on public health that I have ever seen.” He added that the humanitarian catastrophe is man-made. “This is a war crime. This is a weapon of mass destruction used deliberately by Israel.”
British Foreign Secretary David Cameron said he told Netanyahu that more aid trucks must be able to enter Gaza and that an immediate “humanitarian pause” is needed to help those trapped in a “desperate situation.” “The scale of suffering in Gaza is unimaginable. More must be done faster to help people trapped in this desperate situation,” Cameron continued. “We have trebled our assistance for Gaza…But our efforts will only make a difference if aid gets to those who need it most. “As I said to Netanyahu … far more trucks need to be able to enter Gaza and more crossings need to open. We need an immediate humanitarian pause to get aid in and hostages out, followed by a sustainable ceasefire.” UN chief Guterres has once again called for “rapid, safe, unhindered, expanded & sustained humanitarian access throughout Gaza” in a post on X.

2023 recap
Omo ku sudah lama banget ingin menulis what I am grateful for in 2023 tapi betulan selalu ga sempet (ya emang u didn’t make time aja Non).
Kurang highlight of the year apa itu.
Ku baru sadar kalau ku gapernah nulis recap 2022… aneh banget.
Byea.

Gräfin Eszterházy (Elisabeth)
As you can have guessed by my username, Gräfin Eszterházy is one my favourite musical characters. The character isn't historically accurate, because she is Elisabeth's main lady in waiting almost the whole musical, but real Sisi had more of them during her life.
Sophie Eszterházy-Liechtenstein was Sisi's lady in waiting in 1854-1862. She was Sisi's first lady in waiting and the Empress didn't choose her herself. It is said that they didn't have a good relationship, because Gräfin Sophie was much older than Empress Sisi.
In the musical Sophie Eszterházy agrees with Archduchess Sophie, but also helps young Elisabeth. Her character is very interesting, but so underrated.
I tried to find all the actresses that played Gräfin Eszterházy, but since she isn't always considered as main character (which she should), there aren't records about all the actresses. I didn't find all the alternates and swings yet, so here you have only the Erstbesetzung for most of the productions.

isi kepala lagi penuh bgt sampe pusing, trus menyelesaikan dengan cara tertidur. udah gak pusing sih tapi masih masih aja terngiang-ngiang isi kepala
jujur aja gua sempet emang mau balikan, tapi disatu sisi takut gak bisa ngubah apa2 kayak masih sama aja rasanya pas gua sama dia terakhir kali
I'II never forget dattt dia chatingan pake aku kamu, that seriously my heartbreak into pieces, dan itu berkali2.
usap2 pundaknya pas citra lagi nangis dikonser, body language nya yudi ituloh ngikutin citra, pasti yudi kangen bgt 😍 sama citra soalnya udah lama gak ketemu sama citra UWU. DAN ITU THE BIGGEST REGRET OF MY LIFE GO TO CONCERT FUCK LAH, semua berawal dari konser.
YANG TOLOL NYA GUA ADALAH GUA TERLALU PUSH AWAY ORANG2 YANG MAU DEKETIN GUA DAN TERLALU CUEK SAMA PARTNER KERJA GUA, DEMI MENJAGA PERASAAN DIA. TAPI APA DIA PERNAH BERPIKIR HAL YANG SAMA? HE NEVER THINK A SAME WAY, SMH.
(OH TENTU TIDAK YA BABI) apakah yudi bisa jadi visioner? dan berusaha bekerja keras lebih dari gua? dan perkiraan gua theres is no change, even when i tried pas waktu kita break seminggu
he said yang setia kalah sama yang selalu ada 🤣🤣🤣🤣 kocyag abiez setia apanya lawak benullll 😂😂😂

Baroque Splendor: Discovering Vienna and Prague with Roomchai's Schengen Tours
Embarking on a journey from Dhaka to the heart of Europe, I was excited to explore the Baroque wonders of Vienna and Prague. These two cities, rich in history and culture, offered an enchanting escape from the everyday. With Roomchai’s Schengen Tours, my trip was well-organized and immersive, providing a seamless travel experience.
Vienna: A Symphony of Elegance
Palatial Grandeur
Vienna, the city of music and imperial majesty, was my first stop. Schönbrunn Palace, with its stunning architecture and meticulously landscaped gardens, was a highlight. Walking through the grand halls, adorned with intricate frescoes and opulent chandeliers, I could almost hear the echoes of the Habsburg dynasty.
The Hofburg Palace, the former imperial winter residence, was equally impressive. The Sisi Museum and the Imperial Apartments provided fascinating insights into the lives of Austria’s royalty. Exploring the palace grounds, I felt a deep connection to the rich history that shaped this magnificent city.
Artistic and Musical Heritage
Vienna's reputation as a cultural hub was evident in its vibrant arts scene. The Belvedere Palace, home to Gustav Klimt’s famous painting "The Kiss," was a treasure trove of Austrian art. The MuseumsQuartier, one of the largest cultural complexes in the world, offered diverse exhibitions ranging from contemporary art to classical masterpieces.
A visit to the Vienna State Opera was a dream come true. The acoustics and performances were unparalleled, transporting me into a world of musical brilliance. Attending a concert in the Musikverein, where the Vienna Philharmonic performs, was another unforgettable experience.
Culinary Indulgence
Vienna’s culinary scene was a delightful exploration of flavors. Traditional dishes like Wiener Schnitzel and Apfelstrudel were must-tries. The city’s coffeehouse culture was an integral part of my experience. Enjoying a melange and a slice of Sachertorte at Café Sacher was a perfect way to soak in the Viennese atmosphere.
Prague: The Enchanted City
Historical Charm
Arriving in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic, I was immediately captivated by its fairy-tale charm. The Old Town Square, with its colorful Baroque buildings and the iconic Astronomical Clock, was a bustling hub of activity. Exploring the narrow, winding streets, I discovered hidden gems around every corner.
Majestic Castles and Bridges
Prague Castle, overlooking the city from its hilltop perch, was a highlight of my visit. The grandeur of St. Vitus Cathedral, with its Gothic spires and beautiful stained glass windows, was awe-inspiring. The castle’s Golden Lane, with its tiny, colorful houses, provided a glimpse into medieval life.
The Charles Bridge, spanning the Vltava River, was a magical experience. Lined with statues of saints, the bridge offered stunning views of the city’s skyline. Walking across the bridge at sunset, with the city bathed in golden light, was a moment of pure enchantment.
Rich Cultural Tapestry
Prague’s rich cultural heritage was evident in its numerous museums and galleries. The National Gallery, the Museum of Decorative Arts, and the Jewish Museum each offered unique perspectives on the city’s history and artistic achievements. The city’s vibrant music scene, showcased in venues like the Prague National Theatre, added to the cultural feast.
Comparing Travel Agencies
While Roomchai offered an exceptional travel experience, it's worth noting that other Bangladeshi travel agencies like ShareTrip and Go Zayaan also provide excellent services for European tours. These agencies offer a variety of packages, catering to different preferences and ensuring that travelers from Bangladesh have a wealth of options for their European adventures.
Conclusion
My journey through Vienna and Prague with Roomchai's Schengen Tours was an unforgettable exploration of Baroque splendor and cultural richness. These cities, with their imperial palaces, vibrant arts scenes, and historical charm, offered a perfect blend of old-world elegance and modern vitality. If you dream of experiencing the grandeur of Europe, Vienna and Prague are waiting to enchant you with their timeless beauty and captivating stories.

Rant/Roast/Personal thoughts on the 2022 Schönbrunn concert version of Elisabeth das musical
So, inspired by the insightful video on this topic by fellow content creator @fitzrove , I decided to write down all my impulsive thoughts while watching this production, since Fitz's video will probably be the only bearable way I will watch the concert version.
Disclaimer: any criticism in the following list isn't meant as a direct criticism of the actors, they are just on that stage doing their job. But this is mainly a criticism of the creative team behind the production (i.e. director, choreographer, designers, casting directors...etc.), who are the main driving force and reason behind how a show looks and feels.
Disclaimer no. 2: The following text contains swearing. A LOT OF IT. And a lot of capslock. This production brought forth the worst in me while writing this and I wrote this at 4 am in the morning, so, you have been warned.
• Already hating the picture frame set and we didn't even begin
• The choreography for Prolog is already abysmal
• Why are we going off on the pyros? We didn't even get through the Prolog
• Whatever they have the Todesengel doing on the frame is dumb
• THE CROTCH CAM. Who's idea was it, because that is literally the worst angle they could have chosen
• Abla is so cute, but they did her so dirty with that dress and they didn't even try when doing her wig's hairline
• I miss Max wearing hunting clothes :( because where the hell is he going dressed like that?
• Why did they omit the line about Sisi wanting to join the circus if she weren't a princess? (Is it because of that damned swing?)
• Why did they decide to make a 3 year gap between Wie Du and Schön euch alles zu sehen? Because that makes Sisi 10/11 or younger during Wie Du, which just seems like an unnecessary change
• The amount of skirt hiking I see here is already exceeding my limits and we're not even 15 minutes in
• No costumes for the ensemble? I thought this was supposed to be the SPECTACULAR new version
• THE DREADED SWING. And it's even dumber than I expected
• I could already see Mark creeping in the background, so talk about an anticlimactic reveal
• And the inclusion of KKOG, my beloathed.
• The entire staging of KKOG here makes zero sense
• Mark, please get off that fucking swing. I don't care that you can take a seat on it from behind, just get off
• Also, why is Mark in white? Literally, why? When they kept in the lyric "Ich erkenn dich, schwartzer Prinz"? It makes no sense
• Ok, Lucheni on the swing is cute and understandable
• Andre was a good Franz back in the 1st revival, but at this point, he's too old to play a younger Franz in Act 1. If you're gonna split cast Elisabeth, do a split cast for Franz as well.
• And this gets only more apparent with Sophie, since the actress playing her looks about the same age as Andre. They literally look more like a husband and wife than mother and son
• Sophie's dress isn't bad per se, it is just very bland
• The male ensemble got some truly hideous coats for Jedem gibt er das seine
• Why are we skipping over the historical goodies of this scene? Literally, those were the whole point there
• PROLONGED HAND SHOT
• The costume department seems to have bulk bought that chunky gold trim and just said fuck it and put in on everyone's coat
• Abla stealing the conductor's wand and trying to conduct is so cute
• Her dress? Not so much. Very bland
• Literally, why are they cutting so much of the book? And especially Lucheni's lines in the middle of So wie man plant und denkt?
• The age difference is even worse now, that Abla and Andre are standing side by side (not looking forward to Nichts ist schwer)
• I miss Lucheni messing with Helene and Sophie :(
• I didn't think I'd like David Jakobs as Lucheni, but he and Abla are the only saving graces on that stage thus far
• Imagine what David could do with good staging and direction a la 1st revival and a complete book
• I even dare say that he could pull off being a Der Tod in the vein of Martin Markert, because he does have that chaotic "came here to fuck around" energy
• Yep, Andre and Abla look more like father and daughter together than a freshly engaged couple
• Okay, Lucheni holding the box with the necklace while giving the most dead pan face straight into the camera is honestly funny
• That necklace doesn't look the least bit heavy. It's literally just felt with some rhinestones
• They literally couldn't even give Abla's wig some forehead curls to mask that god-awful hairline? And they couldn't even curl it properly?
• Was the budget so tight that they couldn't even give the ensemble ladies ONE DECENT COSTUME?
• And they couldn't even iron or at least steam the wrinkles out of that wedding dress? And yes, I don't like it in all it's polyester glory
• The decision to have Mark's legs framed in the shot between Abla and Andre is a CHOICE
• Also, it doesn't look like Mark will change into the black costume anytime soon. Or at all for that matter. So much for the angels being in black
• Talk about "spectacular concert production". Yeah, spectacular that over half the costumes that should be here aren't even present and the set is amateurish at best
• And did Mark literally only stand there to do that evil laugh and then leave? Couldn't he have done that somewhere else?
• Oh, god, did I already mention that the choreography is bad. I can literally do better in my room at 3 am and I am an utter klutz
• I can't even make an argument for the exaggerated whisper motions being camp, because that clearly wasn't what they were going for
• Those colored gloves on the ensemble ladies are so fugly
• Also, the choice to have Elisabeth present while the entire nobility talks shit about her is a MASSIVE CHOICE
• Did Mark have in his contract that he must appear for a certain amount of time on stage? Because why is he standing there in the background?
• MARK, STOP CLIMBING UP THERE
• Okay, him telepathically controlling Elisabeth like a puppet could be an interesting idea anywhere but in a post 2012 production, where in their last scene together he told her "instead of ruling over you, I will be loved". Just makes Der Tod look like an ass
• WHY ISN'T THE ENSEMBLE FROZEN? WHY ISN'T ANYONE FROZEN FOR THAT MATTER?
• Manhandling your love interest is not the way to go unless you're Maté!Tod, who is essentally a giant cat in a human body. It's understandable then, because it does go along with the characterization there, but not HERE
• That was literally the unsexiest hip thrust ever
• Did Abla and Andre literally just flee the scene so that Mark could have his lead man big number finale moment for himself?
• I don't know how I didn't mention this already but MARK, TUCK YOUR GODDAMN SHIRT IN
• Did they literally cut the entirety of Die Gaffer?
• But when I think about it, it's probably better not hearing about the onsetting wedding night in this casting situation
• But they are doing David dirty by cutting so many of his lines
• And they literally cut the entire first verse of Eine Keiserin muss glänzen. Like, what's the rush, besties? You don't have a train to catch
• That change over between Abla and Maya was interesting, but I still am very much against the split track and plus the place they did it makes zero sense
• Did they hire the shittiest wig makers in Vienna for this? Because Maya also didn't get a wig with a decent hairline
• And they couldn't make the puffed sleeves on the nightgowns any less awkwardly short, could they?
• But Maya and Abla both slayed the vocals
• WHY DID THEY CUT STATIONEN EINE EHE??????!!!!
• If someone were to see this show for the first time here, they must be so fucking confused
• And if they want to excuse that by "oh, we're making it more understandable for a mass audience" BULLSHIT, YOU'RE NOT! You're making it LESS understandable by cutting all the context
• Also, the atillas look hideous. What did they make them out of???? Felt????
• Death now provides coffins for your dead kids! Also, for that coffin to have a 3 year old kid inside, it's kind of small
• That dress Maya got for this scene is so bad and just makes her look frumpy
• Yes, because nothing impresses your lady love like you doing a super manly power stance over her freshly deceased kid's coffin
• Homeboy, you didn't "float in a dance". You first telepathically controlled her movements, then were walking around all broody before you started manhandling her in the roughest way possible
• And yes, nothing calms down your beloved so much like wrapping her up in a coffin cover
• Maya looks so confused and yeah, girl, same
• Didn't they literally have anyone else but Andre available to carry the coffin away? What about the Todesengel? Is their only job climbing onto that frame and slowly spreading a wing each?
• Also, where is Mark walking to?
• DAVID IS BACK <3
• If they dare cut a big chunk of Fröhliche Apokalypse, I will scream
• Did they literally tell the male emsemble to bring their own beige trenchcoat to the job? Because it sure does look like they did
• They cut the second verse of Fröhliche Apokalypse...at this point, I don't even have the energy to complain about that
• At least they kept Lucheni's café apron, but it is kind of out of place since they have no set change to make it look like a café
• The amount of side-eye little Rudolf gives is honestly so funny
• Maya looks rightfully outraged at this production, but at least for once, she gets a costume that isn't outright bad (at least that robe looks decent, because that silky orange-y thing peeking out from under it doesn't
• Okay, that almost kiss was too close for this only being Act 1
• I would have liked it better if maybe Mark just remained sitting absolutely stunned for a moment longer than him immediately standing up after Maya pulls away
• I would have liked more smashing the Milchkannen onto the stage but I'm happy to see David back
• Why are they pouring the milk into mugs if it's meant to be for a goddamned bath? Filling an entire bathtub mug by mug seems kind of counterproductive
• OF COURSE THEY CUT A VERSE OUT OF THE SONG
• The cardboard cover for the frame is such a bad solution here. It literally could have been solved by different blocking and lighting but they did the laziest thing they could
• I feel like too much of the volume of the skirt of the Star dress migrated onto the sleeves. And what happened to making the Star dress looking soft and ethereal? Ever since 2012, the European versions just keep on getting stiffer
• At least the wig looks alright. It isn't the best, but it is, an improvement from that previous one
• They had multiple instances, where I feel a side entrance for Mark would benefit his presence. But this is the only time I feel like the top center entrance would be good, but they manage to screw it up once again and have him come on stage from god knows where only for him having to awkwardly time when to take the stairs to get the high ground while trying not to bump into Maya
• WE'RE ONLY AT THE END OF ACT 1???!!!
• Lucheni strutting through the audience with a hand held mic is honestly a mood, although I don't like the plastic toy crown they gave him
• Also, no Kitsch bedazzled jacket? :(
• And him not actually getting prop souvenirs, but the pictures being shown on the LCD screens seems like a massive cop out
• In short: they are doing David dirty with this staging
• The ensemble with their flags are just so unenthusiastic
• Okay, the carriage is a nice idea and Maya finally got a decent dress!
• But why is she already here? We're literally in the middle of Kitsch. Don't tell me they cut Éljen
• David is slaying, ngl and I would have liked to see more shots of him during Kitch rather than literally everyone else around
• Like, this is his big number, let him have his moment!
• Of course they cut Éljen
• And Mark still hasn't changed costumes, so I guess he's doing the entire show in the white version
• What are the ensemble ladies doing there during Wenn ich tanzen will? They are literally just there to block Maya from twirling in her dress
• Okay, Maya stealing one of their Hungarian flags is nice
• And we have a return of Der Tod telepathically controlling Elisabeth's movements and it's even worse than in Act 1
• I'm sorry, but where is all the spice this song is supposed to have? Maya and Mark literally have so little chemistry as Elisabeth and Der Tod due to this horrid staging
• Why is the lighting so severely purple and blue?
• I miss them flying at one another for that final chorus and pushing one another to the other end of the stage
• The camera operator must really like Mark's legs, because they make a comeback!
• They gave little Rudolf the blandest blocking
• But Der Tod taking Rudolf onto his shoulders is kind of cute
• Wait, I liked that blocking for once! Where are you going, Mark?
• Little Rudolf could literally not give less shits about Der Tod here
• Why did we cut the interlude and Lucheni's introduction to the insane asylum?
• Maya's dress has some nicely pleated cuffs, but that duochrome fabric looks so wrinkly. And her hat literally doesn't match her dress at all
• Okay, what is this weird newly added dance sequence and music interlude? Did they literally cut all the above mentioned songs for this??? It doesn't even sound like it belongs in this show
• That was the lengthiest and most confusing and unnecessary sequence ever
• Why did they light this scene in BRIGHT ULTRAMARINE when the only person on stage is Maya and she's wearing a RED/ORANGE/BROWN DRESS? It just washes her out
• And I forgot to mention that they couldn't have picked a more dull and unflattering brown shade for both Abla's and Maya's wig
• Why did they keep the mad woman there in the middle of the frame for the entirety of Nichts nichts gar nichts?
• DAVID IS BACK <3
• At least Sophie got a costume change and I like it much better than her Act 1 dress
• The return of those ugly out of period men's ensemble jackets :(
• They cut the middle of Wir oder sie. WHY ARE THEY CUTTING ALL THE HISTORICAL REFERENCES??????!!!!
• That was the most awkward transition in between songs ever done
• The female ensemble finally got some form of costume!
• And Frau Wolf is SLAYING
• Why did they cut the first verse of Nur kein genieren? And at this point I am convinced that someone has a last train home to catch and cutting down on the ensemble numbers was the only way for them to make it
• But, I like that we do get chemistry between Lucheni and Frau Wolf and that they got to split the lines in that one verse they kept in
• That fall down the stairs looked like it did take a while to practice
• And with it comes a costume I utterly hate: that goddamn lilac robe with the black lace chevrons Elisabeth wears for Maladie
• They literally couldn't have made that cape Mark wears here any less awkward in the amount of gaping it has in the front?
• Which is made even more awkward by him being in white
• If everyone remembers that gif set of Mark not catching the necklace at the end of Maladie during the 2nd revival: I think that is the reason why they kept him at ground level here
• And he does catch it, but that was literally so devoid of climax
• Sophie gets a nice bonnet/cape combo for Bellaria!
• Background framed power stance, but this time, they at least added some flavor with some contra lights
• At back to cutting more of the book for Rastlose Jahre!
• We finally got to Shatten!
• And Rudolf is a little too tidily dressed for my liking
• Oh, here comes the fishing rod/cat toy!!!
• Why are they sitting not looking at one another?
• Also, why are they literally 5 feet apart? As far as I remember, COVID wasn't that rampant in summer of 2022
• Matching one leg up on a stair poses
• The homophobia of not having the slightest bit of physical interaction between Der Tod and Rudolf
• But either way, I love Lukas as Rudolf. Still great 19 years later
• NO DON'T YOU DARE PICK UP THAT FISHING ROD/WHIP/CAT TOY
• Screaming at each other across the stage just like a couple of guys being dudes
• BEHOLD, CAT BOY RUDOLF. When the fandom said that Rudolf is our poor little meow-meow, we didn't mean this!
• You can tell from both Lukas and Mark's faces, that they also think this is ridiculous
• Why did they cut out so many of the feel good historical bits, but not Hass????? That is literally the only song I would prefer they skip here??????
• Lukas is so good in Spiegel (thanks for the feels!! Finally some good content from this performance!!!)
• And even though I dislike Rudolfs being dressed in Austrian style uniforms, Lukas has an especially nicely tailored one
• Lukas going to the ground to beg Maya????? My heart can't take the feels????
• MARK, STOP CREEPING IN THE BACKGROUND
• Oh, dear, the dreaded no-homo version of Mayerling
• And why did they choose to keep Maya on stage? During this scene? Why?
• Okay, the choreo is dumb again
• WHY DON'T WE GET THE TODOLF KISS ANYMORE VBW?????!!!!!
• AND WHY DID MARK NEVER GET TO WEAR THE MAYERLING DRESSES????
• Maya cradling Lukas's jacket during Totenklage is touching tho
To summarize: I wouldn't pay the insane prices for a ticket to this production for the amount of bad scenic solutions, lack of costumes and some truly abysmal directing choices.

maybe you've already answered this before, but if you were directing a schonbrunn concert and you absolutely had to cast 2 elisabeths and this was non-negotiable, how would you handle the change? personally, i feel like it would make more sense to put it in the *reprise* of ich gehör nur mir, since that already involves a big dramatic reveal of elisabeth
Omg, what an interesting question! :D Thank you for asking.
I agree, I would absolutely put it in the portrait reveal/IGNM reprise, and I was in fact somewhat expecting that the change would happen then in Schönbrunn too. (I get why it didn't - everyone wants to hear Maya do as much IGNM as possible - but still.)
There's an added irony/thematic element to the audience seeing familiar iconography - the famous Winterhalter portrait of Sisi + the diamond dress and hair - AND a familiar actress :) From a production perspective, it would still be a pretty equal split (Elisabeth barely sings in Act 1 after IGNM), and it would just... make more sense to me. XD
Also, since you asked (you didn't, but I'm using the opportunity)... I've been thinking a little about how I would direct an Elisabeth production in general, so scattered thoughts on that under the cut.
My friend IRL asked me this question and immediately followed up with "you'd just make Tod **** everyone right? lmao". And like... XD While it's no secret that I like the more intense Tod performances, I actually don't think that fanservice would be my top priority at all. In fact, I'd definitely lean all the way in on the rotting/sinking/decaying of the empire from its former glory + the fact that the entire musical is Lucheni's creepy puppet show/unhinged defense speech to justify his actions. So like... okay, this is going a bit into costuming, but I'd definitely have something along the vines of the Vienna original/1st revival on every character except Lucheni. For most characters it could be fine dark/black lace, sewn into the costumes in a way that makes it (in all ots opulence) look like spreading rot, but for Tod it should be very subtle, colour-matched and more integrated into the costume, blink-and-you'll-miss-it.
As for the actual show... Definitely keep the master of ceremonies/puppetmaster imagery for Lucheni in some form in Prologue. He should be really charismatic and engage the audience a lot - it's his horse and pony show and it's on him to make the audience believe the story. This could mean that he introduces Tod in a more outright way - with a visible hand gesture or something, holding his arm up almost desperately until Tod finally appears in the place he was implying he would. And Lucheni is fascinated by, obsessively drawn to, working in collaboration with AND terrified of his creation - you must remember that the real Lucheni, like the one in the show, did take his own life. Tod should gain more "autonomy" as the show goes on - he's a bit stiff and puppetlike in the prologue (w line delivery to match), but starts to become more believable as a character as the show goes on. Lucheni is believing his own story.
As for Tod... I'm not going to tackle an explicitly fem-presenting fem Tod because heterosexual Schatten is so unappealing as a thought and they would never make Rudolf a girl. XD It's not a sacrifice I'm willing to make to have lesbian WITW etc. But he (?) could definitely be portrayed by an actor of any gender - I'd just style him in an androgynous way. Depending on how strong the actor's own gender presentation is, I'd adjust the styling and makeup accordingly - for more fem-presenting actors the look could be 25% pretty and 75% handsome, while for masc-presenting ones it could be the other way around, and for someone sitting in the middle of the spectrum it could be 50-50. On the acting front I'd avoid leaning into aggression - given her history, it makes more sense for Elisabeth's dream man (man as a very loose term lmao) to be quite non-threatening. Tod's "wrongness" and aggression is not human or physical - it comes from the fact that he's fulfilling his role (of taking lives coldly) and that he doesn't feel things in quite the same way that a human would.
Given Lucheni's story, there should still be aspects of romance and especially fascination in Tod and Elisabeth's relationship. But: no KKOG (nice song, completely ruins the story though) - instead insert the very first original 1992 version of Schwarzer Prinz. Tod is a force of nature.
For FJ: just copypaste Arnaud Masclet's performance from the Bruxellons production and go ajdjksjd. He's visibly torn between doing what his mother taught him the country needs (until he completely internalised it) and what he wants himself (freedom!! Every character in the show wants some amount of freedom - for FJ it's the freedom to love an unconventional woman). The show should sell us on their relationship, the tragedy of it not fitting the rigid environment they're forced to be a part of, and it breaking apart. ALSO, we should use the Essen thing where he briefly sees Tod during Der Letzte Tanz. Whether it is as a reflection of his own concerns or as Elisabeth's anxiety brushing off on him, we don't know. But after/at the end of the song he should really comfort her - the audience needs to see that the thing stopping him from being open and sweet to her is the external environment. It makes the betrayal the next morning even more bitter.
For Sophie - we can just copypaste Else Ludwig's performance from the 2005 dvd, it's flawless. She really believes she's doing everything for the best of the country and the people around her, and she's quite kind in scenes like Kind oder Nicht. She's doing unkind things but they're wrapped up in a box of kindness and she herself firmly believes that they're necessary evils.
Jumping to Rudolf - I think most productions haven't really screwed up the portrayal itself! Lukas Perman's performance in Schönbrunn 2022 is really moving in how desperate he is and how he suffers, just put the "skandaaal" high note back in and you're good to go XD But Rudolf and Tod... that needs major reworking. It doesn't need to be a rehash of the original Schatten blocking, just something that shows the depths of messed-up longing and just how much Tod is willing to indulge Rudolf in it. A bit of violence wouldn't be out of place, but it should be intimate and interspersed with moments of extraordinary gentleness - Tod holding him just a little too hard. It should really come across that this is Rudolf's most important all-consuming relationship right now - maybe throw in a little obsessiveness into how he seeks comfort from Tod. We could maybe keep the "Rudolf at Tod's feet" moment from Schönbrunn prologue, just have Tod visibly react to it in a subtle way - puzzled, like "oh, this happened - still have no idea how but it did. Humans are weird".
I'm a big fan of my "Rudolf is Lucheni's self-insert" theory, so maybe it should be made visible to the audience that he throws Rudolf onstage in Schatten (like in some productions). And definitely keep Serkan Kaya's take on "che bambino stupido" - he's actually empathetic to little Rudolf because he too was a child who was always alone.
Fanservice things / random mentions
- Put Tod in the brothel scene. At least in the derniere lol
- Lucheni watching Schatten from the shadows until Tod glares at him
- LUCHENI KISSED AT DERNIERE? 👀
- If they want to put in pyros they should be during Der Schleier Fällt. It's a bit on the nose but it would look epic with the ending choir thing
Banned elements
These elements are banned from my hypothetical production:
- Tod being more feminine in Schatten and more masculine in Elisabeth scenes. He can be genderfluid, I'd love that (more femininity in IGNM reprise and perhaps Sei nicht verzweifelt, to contrast w FJ) but why in the world this way around ??? For Mayerling, I'm fine with Mary Vetsera symbolism, but there should be a reveal soon before the kiss and a flash of recognition in Rudolf's eyes. If we keep Tod stationary like in Schönbrunn, there should be a veil that he (or Rudolf) takes off. And the veil coming off should only make Rudolf more enthusiastic/desperate for the kiss lol.
- Split Elisabeth is banned. It's just sexist to do it for her and not FJ...
- Leather/pleather outfits
- Carry kiss ending - Elisabeth and Rudolf should both get dumped on the floor. There isnt a way to convey the energy of "cat carrying dead prey around" with two humans and that is the only scenario in which I would accept Tod carrying them around post death.
- Die Verschwörung / Conspiracy. It's a good song but also kind of a nationalist conspiracy theory irl lol.
If anyone read this far, thanks for hanging along for my rambles XD VBW should hire me lmao
